Sr. Lorraine Marie Slomkowski, CSSF

Sr. Lorraine Marie Slomkowski, CSSF, a native of Saginaw, age 83, religious for 65 years, entered eternal life July 16 in St. Mary Hospital, Livonia.

Born July 25, 1929, the first child of Sylvester and Clara (Wagner) Slomkowski, Lorraine was baptized Aug. 11, 1929, at Holy Rosary Church, Saginaw, where she attended grade school for eight years. She spent her early life with brothers, Eugene and Sylvester.

Lorraine attended Central Junior High and Saginaw Senior High prior to entering the Felician Congregation in 1947. At the Investiture ceremonies, she received the name Sr. Mary John, later changed to Sr. Lorraine Marie. Final vows were professed in 1955.

Sr. Slomkowski earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Madonna University and began a long and rewarding journey as an educator. She taught primary and secondary grades for 40 years  in the following schools: St. Stanislaus,  Assumption, St. John Cantius, St. Christine, St. Ignatius, and St. Stephen — all in Detroit; St. Florian, Hamtramck; Our Lady of Refuge, Orchard Lake; St. Michael, Port Austin;  Holy Spirit, Grand Rapids; St. Stanislaus, Bay City; St. Hyacinth, Bay City (teacher and principal); St. Edith, Livonia; St. Damian, Westland; St. Anne, Monroe; St. Mel Dearborn Heights; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wyandotte; St. Valentine, Redford; St. John Vianney, Wyoming; Holy Family and St. Adalbert, South Bend, Ind.; St. Adalbert, Toledo, Ohio.

Sr. Slomkowski also served as a religious education instructor, and spent many summers teaching at St. Francis School in Flint, and Holy Spirit in Shields.

Love of the outdoors drew Sr. Slomkowski to Guardian Angel Camp in Holly, where she spent six summers as a counselor to 12- and 13-year old girls. When the camp closed, she continued on at Maryville Retreat Center during the next five years, providing meals for the guests.  She was also the administrator for one summer.

Sr. Slomkowski is survived by her brother, Eugene. Mass of Christian Burial was July 20 at the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel of the Central Convent of the Felician Sisters in Livonia, with Fr. Timothy Babcock, chaplain, as the celebrant. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
