Sr. Mary Louise Gattes, SC, died Oct. 18 at Mother Margaret Hall, the nursing facility of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, in Delhi Township, Ohio. She was 97, and had been a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 79 years
She was born May 7, 1914, in Sidney, Ohio, the daughter of John and Florence(Altenbach) Gattes. She earned the Bachelor of Arts in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati in 1950.
Sr. Gattes ministered almost exclusively as a primary and intermediate schoolteacher in the archdioceses of Detroit and Cincinnati, and the dioceses of Columbus and Lansing, from 1934 until 1971 including at Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal Oak (1934 -39); Guardian Angels, Detroit (1940-49); and St. Mary, Jackson (1963-64).
In 1971, Sr. Gattes retired from teaching and began a 25-year volunteer ministry serving the poor who came to the Cathedral of St. Peter in Chains in Cincinnati seeking assistance.
She retired to the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Motherhouse to serve in the ministry of prayer in 1998.
Nieces and nephews survive her.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Oct. 24 in the chapel of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Motherhouse, Mount St. Joseph, Ohio. Burial was in the congregation’s cemetery.
