Sr. Mary Therese O’Donnell, IHM, formerly Sr. Raphael Marie O’Donnell, IHM. died Nov. 6, at the IHM Sisters’ Motherhouse in Monroe. She was 78.
Born Dec. 8, 1931 in Detroit to Gerald and Olivette (Wall) O’Donnell, she was given the name Mary Therese. She attended Custer and St. Gregory elementary schools and graduated from St. Gregory High School in Detroit. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1949, taking the religious name Sr. Raphael Marie.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College in Detroit and a master’s degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. She taught in formal education for 45 years at St. Charles, St. Matthew, Our Lady of Good Counsel, St. Raymond and Epiphany, Detroit; Sacred Heart, Roseville; Immaculate Heart of Mary High School, Westchester, Ill.; St. Felicitas, Chicago; Sacred Heart, Dearborn; and served as principal of Star of the Sea Elementary School in Jackson. She also ministered in Indiana and Pennsylvania.
She retired in 2003 to Marygrove Convent and returned to the IHM Motherhouse in 2003.
She remained an active volunteer until her death.
Besides Sr. Patricia, she is survived by nieces and nephews.
She had been under the care of Mercy Memorial Hospice of Monroe.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Nov. 9 by Fr. Robert Singelyn in the IHM Motherhouse Chapel in Monroe.
Following cremation, her remains will be interred in St. Mary Cemetery on the motherhouse campus.
