Sr. Marita, Josephine Winowiecki, CSSF, entered eternal life March 3 at St. Joseph Convent in Livonia.  She was 88 years old and 71 years in religious life.

Born in Detroit on March 19, 1928, Josephine was the sixth of 15 children of Frank and Bertha (Boone). She enrolled in the seminary of the Felician Sisters in Detroit and was accepted into the postulancy on June 6, 1945. First profession of vows was in 1947 and final profession in 1953. Sr. Winowiecki earned degrees from Madonna University and Central Michigan University.

Sr. Winowiecki ministered in education for 41 years in Michigan and Ohio, including at: Resurrection, Our Lady Help of Christians and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Detroit; St. Anthony and St. Adalbert, Toledo; St. Joseph, Manistee; St. Cecilia, Clare; Holy Rosary, Saginaw; St. Valentine, Kawkawlin;  St. Joseph, Jackson; St. John the Baptist, Alpena; St. Stanislaus, Bay City; Manistee Catholic Central; St. Jude, Grand Rapids; St. Florian, Hamtramck; Our Lady of the Lake, Prudenville; and St. Damian, Westland.

In 1988, she was assigned to the Montessori Center of Our Lady in Livonia for a year, then joined the staff at St. Joseph Home, Jackson. Completing a two-year assignment at Maryville in Holly as a center aide, Sr. Winowiecki returned to St. Joseph Home as sacristan and receptionist, and assisted with weekend retreats.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 3 in the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel of the Felician Sisters’ Central Convent in Livonia. Burial is in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
