Sr. Martha Marie Rabaut, IHM, 89, died Aug. 5 at the IHM Sisters’ Motherhouse in Monroe.

Martha Mary Rabaut was born in Grosse Pointe to Louis C. and Stella (Petz) Rabaut on Nov. 25, 1927. Martha graduated from Marygrove College and in 1951 entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Sr. Rabaut’s early teaching career took her to St. John and St. Joseph, Monroe; and St. Mary of Redford, Holy Rosary and Our Lady Queen of Hope, Detroit. She earned a master’s degree from Marquette University and then taught at Marian, Bloomfield Hills, and St. Cecilia, Detroit. She served the IHM community as directress of postulants, novices and formation. Sr. Rabaut also served in pastoral ministry and as retreat and spiritual director at Visitation House of Prayer, Monroe, as well as in Tennessee and Virginia. In 1996, she became coordinator of the IHM Eco-Justice Office, and was a longtime participant in the IHM Peacemakers and several Earth-focused committees.

Remembering and memorial Mass were celebrated Aug. 11 at the IHM Motherhouse. Green burial is in St. Mary Cemetery on the motherhouse campus.
