Sr. Mary Alexis, Magdalen Jachimowicz of Kingston, Penn., age 95, religious for 78 years, died March 1 at St. Joseph Care Center in Livonia.
Born May 27, 1917, Sr. Jachimowicz was baptized at St. Hedwig Church in Kingston, Penn. Following a move to Hamtramck, she attended Our Lady Queen of Apostles Grade School and completed high school at the Seminary of the Felician Sisters in Detroit. She was accepted into the Felician Congregation in 1935 and made perpetual vows in 1943.
Sr. Jachimowicz received a bachelor’s degree in music from Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in New York and a master’s in music education from Notre Dame. She pursued the study of French at Madonna, Oakland and Wayne State universities, Laval University in Quebec, and Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. Sister spent a summer in France at the Center for French Studies (Centre d’Etudes Francaises d’Amboise), and a summer in Poland, where she received a diploma from the Polish Cultural and Learning Center of the University of Marie Curie-Sklodowska in Lublin. Sister also attended Spanish classes at the University of Detroit.
During her 73 years in education, Sr. Jachimowicz taught at St. Andrew, St. Stanislaus, Our Lady Help of Christians and St. Stephen-Mary, Mother of the Church, all in Detroit; St. Stanislaus and All Saints in Bay City; Holy Rosary, Saginaw; St. Joseph and Catholic Central in Manistee; St. Mary, Ruth; St. Valentine, Kawkawlin; St. Adalbert, South Bend, Ind.; St. Adalbert, Toledo, Ohio; Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Wyandotte; Ladywood High School and Madonna University in Livonia. At her last assignment at St. Cunegunda and St. Barbara in Detroit, Sister was the director of religious education, pastoral assistant and librarian.
Her talent was further evidenced through the production of many musicals and concerts as band and choral director. She composed, directed, sang, and played several instruments and participated in music choral festivals.
Deeply spiritual and with a special devotion to Our Blessed Lady, Sr. Jachimowicz was energetic, firm yet gentle, a person of magnanimous strength. In 2007, Sr. Jachimowicz was assigned to the central convent, and among her responsibilities was that of Polish translation.
In the early hours of March 1, she peacefully left this earth to return to the God whom she so faithfully and joyously served on this earth. No doubt she is in the celestial choir singing and trumpeting His praise for all eternity. Sr. Jachimowicz is survived by a sister, Mary Stabinski.
The Mass of Resurrection was March 4 celebrated by Fr. Zbigniew Grankowski, pastor of St. Cunegunda and St. Barbara. Fr. Timothy Babcock, chaplain, assisted. Burial was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
