Sr. Mary Carlos Knight, RSM, died peacefully at the McAuley Center on April 29. She was 83 and a Sister of Mercy for 67 years.

Born Feb. 14, 1933, in Detroit to Henry and Dorothy (Pamoville) Knight, she was baptized Dolores Dovona, the oldest of seven children. At the age of 16, she entered the convent, and made perpetual vows with the Sisters of Mercy on Aug. 16, 1955.

Sr. Knights served as a teacher and principal in schools in Berkley, Hazel Park, Cheboygan, Lansing, Wyoming, Howell and Ludington. She later served as director of the small Montessori School on the Mercy College campus, and as adviser for Angels’ Place in Southfield. In 2005, she joined the pastoral care team at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, where she volunteered with Catherine’s House, an outreach program for women and children in need of clothing and supplies.

Sr. Knight is survived by her brother, William, of Spring, Texas; and sister, Bonnie Laughlin, Port Richie, Fla.; as well as nieces and nephews, colleagues, friends and the Sisters of Mercy.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated May 3 at the McAuley Life Center in Farmington Hills. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
