Sr. Mary Cecile Quirke, OP

Sr. Mary Cecile Quirke, formerly known as Sr. Michael Cecile Quirke, died Jan. 10 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 87 and in her 64th year of religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Quirke was born in Chicago to Michael and Cecilia (Morley) Quirke. She received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in English from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian; a Master of Science degree in Education from Barry College(University) in Miami Shores, Florida, and a Master of Arts degree in Theology from DePaul University in Chicago.

Sr. Quirke spent 26 years ministering in education in Iowa, Ohio, Michigan, Florida, Illinois, and California. In the Archdiocese of Detroit, she daught at Dominican High School (1954-55) and St. Mary School in Royal Oak (1967-70). She also served in Communications Central Services in Adrian for three years and a staff member in the History/Archives Department for one year. Sr. Quirke became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan in 2001.

She is survived by brother John Quirke and three sisters, Eileen Linden, Loretta Cafarelli, and Sr. Kieran Therese Quirke, an Adrian Dominican Sister.

Sr. Quirke’s funeral Mass was Jan. 13 in the St. Catherine Chapel at the Dominican Life Center. Memorials to the Adrian Dominican Sisters,1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, 49221.
