Sr. Mary Dougherty, OP

Sr. Mary Dougherty, OP, formerly known as Sr. John Aquin Dougherty, died Jan. 23 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 91 and in the 72nd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Dougherty was born in Chicago to John and Mary (Dineen) Dougherty. She graduated from Aquinas High School in Chicago and received a Bachelor of Arts in Latin from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian and a Master of Arts in Latin from the Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

Sister spent 27 years ministering in elementary and secondary education in Michigan, Florida, Illinois and New York. In Michigan, she taught at St. Alphonsus, Dearborn (1943-44); St. Ambrose, Detroit (1945-46); Precious Blood, Detroit (1946-47); Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, Detroit (1949-51); and was principal at Our Lady of Sorrows, Farmington (1957-59).

She became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Michigan, in 2000.

Sr. Dougherty is survived by a brother, John Dougherty of Benbrook, Texas; two sisters, Jean Quigley of Springfield, Ill., and Rita Dougherty of Bolingbrook, Ill.; and a cousin, Rev. Peter Dougherty of Lansing. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sr. Eleanor Dougherty, OP.
