Sr. Mary Edward (Mary Ann) Zalewski, CSSF, of Dearborn, died July 19 at St. Mary Mercy Hospital, Livonia. She was 80 and in religious life for 55 years.Mary Ann Zalewski was born Feb. 23, 1934, the second of five children to Anthony and Laura (Pelot) Zalewski. Baptized March 4, 1934, at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Detroit, she attended St. Andrew grade and high schools, graduating in 1951. She earned a bachelor’s degree in science from Madonna (College) University in 1957 and was employed in the medical laboratory at Grace Hospital for the next year.
She was accepted into the Felician Congregation in 1959, and invested with the habit on Aug. 11, 1960. First profession of vows was Aug. 12, 1961, and final profession Aug. 7, 1967.
Sr. Zalewski was one of 13 founding sisters at St. Mary Hospital, Livonia. Her ministerial roles included medical technologist and director of cardiovascular service, a position she held until 1990. She established, developed and coordinated a cancer registry for the next 10 years. Sr. Zalewski worked as diabetes insurance verifier from 2000-03, and as patient records auditor at Angela Hospice from then until her retirement in March 2014.
Sr. Zalwski is survived by her sisters Catherine Barton, Rose Malinowski and Irene (Michael) Kowalski and nieces and nephews.
Mass of Resurrection was July 25 at Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Chapel in Livonia. Following cremation, her remains were interred in in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
