Sr. Mary Flocella Schulist died June 21 at Beaumont Hospital in Farmington Hills. She was 95 and a Sister of Mercy for 78 years.
Rose Schulist was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Polonia, Wis., the first of seven children of Simon and Regina (Wayak) Schulist. On Aug. 16, 1944, she made perpetual vows with the Sisters of Mercy in Mother of Mercy Chapel in Detroit.
Sr. Schulist was a faculty member in Michigan’s Catholic schools for 34 years, serving as classroom teacher and as principal. Children in Midland, Manistee, Hemlock, Holland, Rogers City, Traverse City, Saginaw, Grand Haven, Bay City, Ludington and Detroit benefited from her dedicated service. Along the way, she earned her master’s degree from Notre Dame University and attended numerous workshops and conferences.
In 1977, she became a case aide for continuing care services at Mercy Hospital, and three years later she joined the staff at the hospital in pastoral care, serving there until 1990. In 2000, she retired and joined her Sisters at McAuley Center in Farmington Hills the next year.
Funeral services were celebrated at the McAuley Life Center. Burial is in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
