Sr. Mary Giacopelli, OP

Sr. Mary Giacopelli, formerly known as Sr. Dominic Joseph Giacopelli, died Feb. 1 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 79 and in the 60th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Mary was born in Detroit to Dominick and Josephine (Pisciotta) Giacopelli. She graduated from Mackenzie High School in Detroit and received a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in English and a Master of Arts degree in education, both from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian.

Sister spent 22 years ministering in education in Chicago; Cincinnati, Wickliffe and Medina, Ohio; Detroit and Inkster. She taught at Our Lady of Sorrows School (1962-63), St. Edward School (1963-64), St. Jude School (1970-71) and St. Suzanne School (1971-74) in Detroit and at St. Norbert School (1975-76) in Inkster. She ministered in health care for 28 years; a nurse aide for six years, and a nurse assistant for four years in Detroit and Dearborn, including at Fairlane Memorial Convalescent (1976-78) and Plymouth General Hospital (1978-80) in Detroit and Oakwood Hospital (1984-86) in Dearborn. She was also a nurse assistant for 18 years at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. Sister became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2005.

Sr. Mary is survived by two sisters, Lena Giacopelli of Southgate and Catherine Bono of Allen Park.

The Funeral Liturgy was offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Feb. 4. Burial will be in the Congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Adrian Dominican sister, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221.
