Sr. Mary Joseph Kanja, OP, died Nov. 7 at the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in Farmington Hills. She was 67 and in her 38th year as a Cloistered Dominican Nun.

Sr. Mary Joseph (Margaret Wanjiru Kanja), was born March 17, 1950, to Symon Kanja Mbutu and Peris Muringi Kamau in the Central Province of Kenya. She came to the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in October 1997. She served her community by sharing in their lives of prayer and through sewing, candle making, gardening and helping with household duties. When in Kenya, she was elected prioress for a three-year term and then served as directress of formation for three years.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 16. Burial is in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
