Sr. Mary Martin Lewandowski, CSSF

LewandowskiSr. Mary Martin (Emily) Lewandowski, CSSF, died July 7 in St. Joseph Care Center in Livonia. She was 92 and in her 71st year of religious life.

Emily Lewandowski was born in Posen, Mich., on April 5, 1922, the 11th of 13 children born to Paul Lewandowski and Constance (Kapalla) Lewandowski.

She was accepted as a postulant in the Felician Congregation on June 24, 1943. First profession of vows was in 1945, and final profession in 1951.

Sr. Lewandowski earned a bachelor’s degree from Madonna University and a master’s from the University of Detroit, in preparation for a 71-year ministry in education.

Sr. Lewandowski taught at St. Stephen and Our Lady Help of Christians Schools in Detroit early in her ministry, as well as St. Cecilia in Clare and St. Adalbert, South Bend, Ind. She later taught at St. Stanislaus and St. Andrew in Detroit and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Wyandotte.

From 1968-72, Sr. Lewandowski was given an assignment in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where her older sister, Sr. Mary DePorres, was volunteering. Upon returning to the U.S., Sr. Lewandowski taught at Ladywood High School, Livonia; Lumen Christi High School, Jackson; and St. Florian High School, Hamtramck. She was director of residence at Madonna (College) University from 1973-75.

Sr. Lewandowski was director of religious education at St. Dunstan, Garden City, from 1990-2001, and was library assistant from 2001-06 at SS Cyril & Methodius Seminary, Orchard Lake. She retired to St. Joseph Care Center in 2008.

A Mass of Resurrection was July 12 at the chapel of the Felician Sisters’ convent in Livonia. Burial is in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
