Sr. Mary Martin, OP

As was her wish, Sr. Mary Martin, 94, died peacefully in her sleep Oct. 18 at the Motherhouse in Oxford, in the 79th year of religious profession.

Mary was born May 6, 1918, to George and Ann (Martin) in Boardman, Pa., between brothers George and John and moved with her family at the age of 3 to Detroit. She received her elementary education from the Dominican Sisters at SS. Cyril and Methodius School and entered the community at the age of 15. High school at the Felician Academy was completed along with her third- and fourth-grade teaching assignments at SS. Andrew and Benedict School, after which she was assigned to teach at St. Paul in Chicago Heights.

Sr. Mary taught grade school and high school from 1949-61, while earning her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in science at the University of Detroit. In 1961-62, she attended Notre Dame and earned a master’s in theology. During this time, Sr. Mary served as Third Councilor General to the community, Juniorate Mistress, and the Motherhouse Superior and Coordinator and dean of De Lima Junior College until 1971. For the next eight years, Sr. Mary worked as a medical technologist until she and Sr. Lucille Blizman became administrators of Villa Marie for Senior Citizens in Livonia for the next 21 years. In 1999, Sr. Mary “re”- tired and became a driver/volunteer at the Oxford Motherhouse.

Her life was celebrated at the Mass of Resurrection on Oct. 23.
