Sr. Mary Therese Sonnenfeld, CSSF

Sr. Mary Therese (Rosalma) Sonnenfeld, formally known as Theresa Agnes Sonnenfeld, of Marine City, died March 24. She was 77 and in her 60th year of religious profession.

Born in Detroit in 1933, she was the oldest of eight children of Joseph and Stella (Budynek) Sonnenfeld. She joined the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1951 and at the end of her novice year transferred to the Felician. 

Sr. Sonnenfeld earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Madonna University, a Master of Arts in education from Catholic University of America, and a Master of Arts from Aquinas College.

Sr. Sonnenfeld taught at St. Leonard School in East Detroit, St. Michael, St. Edith and St. Genevieve in Livonia, and St. Hubert in Mt. Clemens. For 32 years, her ministry consisted mainly in preparing young children for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion and confirmation, including at St. Andrew Parish in Detroit, St. Michael in Livonia and SS. Peter and Paul in North Branch.

She is survived by brothers, Richard and John, and sisters, Sr. Maria, Caroline Cencer, Elizabeth LeRay, and Rosemary Tenyer, and many nieces and nephews.
