Sr. Xavier Ballance, DC, died Aug. 26 at Providence Hospital in Southfield, where she served faithfully for so many years.Born in 1933 in Columbus, Ohio, she was the only child of Leonard and Frances Ballance. She entered the Daughters of Charity in 1957.
Sr. Ballance’s ministry took her to Michigan, Missouri, Texas, Illinois, Louisiana, Washington, DC, Massachusetts, Alabama and Indiana. From 1975-86, she was president of Providence Hospital in Southfield, and it was during this time she helped purchase the land to accommodate Providence Park Hospital and its pastoral health care campus in Novi. She later returned to Providence Hospital, where she served as board chair from 1999-2010.
In recent years, Sr. Ballance served on the boards of Advantage Health Care for the Homeless, Covenant House Michigan, St. Vincent/Sarah Fisher Center, Detroit Community Initiative, Guest House, Southeast Michigan Hospital Board, and Ascension’s Michigan Market.
A funeral Mass was to be celebrated Aug. 31 at Corpus Christi Parish in Detroit. Interment was to be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.
