Detroit — Less than two years after completing repairs to St. Josaphat Church’s iconic steeple off Interstate 75, Mother of Divine Mercy Parish in Detroit has another steeple project on its hands.

The parish announced in social media post March 11 that St. Joseph Church, another of the three historic churches that make up the parish along with Sweetest Heart of Mary, was being closed for “immediate repairs that must be made to the steeple.”

The posting said the parish’s pastor, Fr. Greg Tokarski, was meeting with the Archdiocese of Detroit’s finance council to facilitate the repair work, and parish representatives were scheduled to meet with engineers and contractors to determine the scope of the repairs needed and to discuss bids.

“As soon as that is done we anticipate the work will begin immediately to secure the structure and repair the damage to the steeple,” the parish statement said. “As more information is available we will share.”

In the meantime, the parish said St. Joseph Church would be temporarily closed until the repairs are complete. Events and Masses that had been planned for St. Joseph Church, such as a parish Lenten mission March 18-20 and a celebration March 19 for St. Joseph’s feast day, had been moved to nearby St. Josaphat.

The parish asked those concerned to “please continue to pray for the health and vitality of our parish.”

In 2013, it was determined that both St. Josaphat and Sweetest Heart of Mary’s steeples had been damaged by years of erosion and wear. After a November 2013 windstorm nearly toppled the steeple at St. Josaphat, repairs were made to reinforce the structure at that church.
