‘Holy Mass with a Musical Setting to Jazz’ coincided with annual Detroit Jazz Festival

DETROIT ─ St. Moses the Black Parish in Detroit was filled with the sound of soul on Aug. 31, when it honored the city’s rich musical heritage with the “Holy Mass with a Musical Setting to Honor the Culture of Jazz in Detroit.”

Fr. Francis Asomkase, SSJ, celebrated the special Mass sponsored by the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Office of Cultural Ministries and Black Catholic Ministry, which coincided with the Detroit Jazz Festival happening downtown during Labor Day Weekend.

The Mass setting to contemporary jazz served as an example of how the celebration of the Eucharist elevates and sanctifies a community’s traditions.
