Archbishop: Detroit Catholic an answer to the needs of modern communications

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

It’s a new day for Catholic publishing in the Archdiocese of Detroit. St. John Paul II, the great communicator and a patron of modern communications, challenged the Church to “put out into the deep” in the modern age (Novo Millennio Ineunte, 1).

During parish listening sessions and at the Synod in 2016, you, the Catholic faithful, echoed his challenge by making it resoundingly clear that the Church in Detroit must embrace the new methods of communicating that have become the primary means by which people connect in the 21st century. As a result, Unleash the Gospel places emphasis on the use of new media in evangelization (Marker 6.4). If the new evangelization is to be “new in method,” we must make use of the most current technology and social media and take advantage of them as gifts to share the Gospel with others and to learn about our faith and Church.

Detroit Catholic is a response to these calls. Our digital news site enables us to reach more people in a timely way where they are – on the “digital continent.”

Detroit Catholic will tackle the most relevant issues of faith of our day, so that readers will find a sure guide on challenging questions and an informed voice on the Catholic topics that affect daily life in the Archdiocese of Detroit, in the U.S. and globally. We will strive to be a partner to accompany readers on your daily faith walk.

It is because of, not despite challenging times in the Church, that the Archdiocese of Detroit is committed to unleashing the Gospel in our age. We are charging ahead because the world needs Jesus now more than ever. He is the portal to eternal life.

My fervent prayer is this new digital news hub will be helpful to you as you grow in faith and we transform ourselves into a band of joyful missionary disciples.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

The Most Reverend Allen H. Vigneron
Archbishop of Detroit
