Academy of the Sacred Heart takes lacrosse title game to OT, falls one goal shy

Detroit -- Bloomfield Hills Academy of the Sacred Heart came as close as a team could get to the state championship, but wound up one goal short in overtime, falling to Grand Rapids Catholic Central 17-16 on the Troy Athens lacrosse field June 11.

In a game that sea-sawed throughout, Catholic Central scored to go up by one with just 21 ticks left on the game clock.

Sacred heart answered the call when Anna Pearson put one by Catholic Central goalie Sophie Vachon with just 6.4 left on the clock to knot the game at 15-15 and force an overtime. It was Pearson's sixth goal of the contest.

But it was Catholic Central that would score with a mere 6.4 seconds left in the extra frame as CC's Haley Brennan netted her fourth goal of the game and cemented a state title for her team.

Academy of the Sacred Heart finished 16-8-2 on the year.

Interestingly, the team's final three games were all decided by a single goal. Sacred Heart had topped Flint Powers in the semifinals by a 13-12 score, and had bested Cranbrook Kingswood by a 10-9 tally in the quarterfinals.

Livonia Ladywood also had made the semifinals of the Division II state lacrosse championships, but fell by a 16-12 score to Grand Rapids Catholic Central.
