Angela Hospice to mark 25 years with gala

Detroit — Angela Hospice, the Felician-sponsored end-of-life care center in Livonia, will mark its 25th anniversary on Nov. 13 with a gala at Livonia’s Laurel Manor.

The hospice started in 1985 when Felician Sr. Mary Giovanni and a small group of volunteers began providing home hospice care, according to a news release issued by the hospice Oct. 8.

“There are so many stories I could tell of the many amazing people we’ve met these past 25 years, and the wonderful families that have welcomed us into their homes and into their lives to help care for their loved one at such a sacred time,” said Sr. Giovanni, who’s still president and CEO of the hospice, in the release.

Since it began, the hospice has cared for thousands of patients and family members. The current Angela Hospice Care Center, situated on the Felician campus on Levan Road, opened in 1994 as the first freestanding hospice facility in Michigan. A new patient wing of the building was added this year in April, giving the hospice 32 private patient rooms.

Most of the patients Angela Hospice cares for, however, receive care in their homes.

“It has been such a blessing to be able to serve so many people,” said Sr. Giovanni. “It has always been with the support of our donors and community friends who have helped us to cary out our work as a non-profit, and who have most recently partnered with us to create this beautiful building we now occupy.”

The anniversary gala will be from 6 until 11 p.m. It will feature dinner, an open bar, auctions, raffles and dancing. The 16 piece Monroe Big Band will provide the entertainment. Reservations are $100 per person, due by Oct. 29. Call Barb Iovan at (734) 953-6045.
