Ann (Schaefer) Kernan

Ann S. Kernan (nee Schaefer) of Grosse Pointe Shores died July 19. She was 81.

Born Jan. 11, 1929 in Detroit to Gilbert F. and Genevieve (Mortensen)., Schaefer, she graduated from Gesu Grammar School in 1942, from Immaculata High School in 1946, and from Marygrove College in 1950 with a degree in journalism.

She married her husband, Peter J. Kernan Jr. on Jan. 19, 1952.

Mrs. Kernan served on the board of directors of Vista Maria, as a member of the Marygrove College Alumni Association, as a Henry Ford Hospital volunteer, as chairman of the City of Grosse Pointe United Foundation Drive, and as a member of the St. Paul on the Lake Parish Altar Society.

She was a parent co-chairman of the Grosse Pointe University School fair raffle. She was also an avid sailor and gardener.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Kernan is survived by three sons, Peter J. III of South Bend, Ind., Christopher J. (Pam) of Sarasota, Fla., and Gilbert S. (Kim) of Darien Conn.; two daughters, Mary K. Mankowski (Vic) of Okemos, and Genevieve K. Lyon (Frank) of Traverse City; grandchildren Peter G. Kernan, Michelle Kernan, Gregory Mankowski, Avery Kernan, James Lyon, Katherine Lyon and Kevin Lyon; and a sister, Patricia Ambrose (Donald). She was preceded in death by two brothers, G. Fred Schaefer Jr. (Maureen) and John F. Schaefer.

A funeral Mass was celebrated July 22 at St. Paul on the Lake Church, Grosse Pointe Farms. Those who knew her are invited to  share a memory at www.verheyden.org
