DETROIT ─ Parishes across the Archdiocese of Detroit have been asked to take up a special collection for relief efforts for Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes struck the country, killing nearly 2,000 people and displacing thousands more.

Archbishop Edwards J. Weisenburger has asked parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit to take up a special collection the weekends of July 4-5 and/or July 11-12, with donations directly sent to Catholic Relief Services.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has called upon all dioceses to take up a special collection to assist Catholic Relief Services as they work through Caritas Venezuela and the local church to deliver emergency shelter, food, safe water, medical care and other critical relief to those affected.

It is encouraged that donations be made directly to Catholic Relief Services so they are transmitted in a timely manner.

Individual gifts can be made online at crs.org/donate/venezuela-earthquake. Checks should be made out to Catholic Relief Services with “Venezuela Earthquake Relief” in the memo line, and mailed directly to CRS at: Catholic Relief Services PO Box 5278 Tipton, IA 52772-0517
