Cabrini softball takes two from Lutheran North

Allen Park -- The Cabrini Monarchs softball team continued its hot start, taking two from Lutheran North in a Tuesday doubleheader.

Cabrini, which is now 8-1 on the season, took the first game by a 12-2 score and the second by a 15-5 tally.

Head coach Debbie Norman says the team’s looking good so far, but after losing some seniors from last year’s team, she’s still hoping the ladies can gel better on the field.

“We’re young and there’s still a lot of improvements to make from a defensive standpoint,” Norman says. “That’s what we’re looking to shore up as the season goes on.”

The team certainly came to life offensively against Lutheran North. Junior outfielder Val Bertani went 4-for-4 at the plate in the first contest, while junior catcher Brianna Surma and senior infielder Amanda Obrycki each knocked in three runs.

Surma’s hot bat persisted in the second game, as she went 2-for-3 and pounded out a two-run homer. Sophomore infielder Gordon Ashley racked up 4 RBIs in the second contest, as well.

The winning pitchers for Cabrini were junior Amanda Fuchs in the first game and sophomore Paige Altherr in the second.

Following a tournament this weekend, the Monarchs will play Madison Heights Bishop Foley in a doubleheader, then a makeup game against Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and a doubleheader against Gabriel Richard.

As Notre Dame Prep and Gabriel Richard currently lead the division, Norman says they’ll be a good benchmark to see where her team is.
