CHSL ‘February Frenzy’ picks back up this weekend

Five down and seven to go.

The Catholic High School League has crowned five champions in the first half of “February Frenzy.” However, that’s just the beginning. There is a lot more action coming.

The champions so far:

Competitive Cheer Champion: Dearborn Divine Child for the ninth year in a row.

Pom Pon and Dance Champion: Warren Regina

Wrestling Champion: Novi Detroit Catholic Central for the 17th consecutive time.

Boys Ski Champion: Catholic Central.

Girls Ski Champion: Bloomfield Hills Marian, their third straight title.

Here’s the “frenzy” in store:

Feb. 19 – Boys and Girls Bowling Championship at Drakeshire Lanes, Farmington Hills. Madison Heights Bishop Foley is the defending boys champion, and Warren Regina, the defending girls champs. Preliminary rounds begin at 9:30 a.m.; the championship round begins at 2 p.m.

Feb. 19 – Girls Hockey Championship at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. Livonia Ladywood, the defending champion for the past four years, will face off against Warren Regina at 5 p.m. (Please note: there’ll be hockey all day starting at 10 a.m. with Royal Oak Shrine against Madison Heights Bishop Foley; at 12 noon, Riverview Gabriel Richard against Pontiac Notre Dame Prep; and at 2:30 p.m., U-D Jesuit takes on Dearborn Divine Child.)

Feb. 20 – Girls Basketball Championship Finals at U-D Mercy Calihan Hall. C-D Division game at 1 p.m. pits the defending C-D champ, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes, against arch-rival Mt. Clemens Cardinal Mooney. At 3 p.m., Farmington Hills Mercy and Livonia Ladywood will play for the A-B Division title.

Feb. 20 – Boys Hockey Championship at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Prep. At 2:30 p.m., Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard and Allen Park Cabrini will vie for the Division II title followed at 5 p.m. by Catholic Central, the defending Division I champion, dueling Warren DeLaSalle for the Division I crown. (Note: Hockey action begins at 12 noon between Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice.)

Feb. 27 – Boys Basketball Championship at U-D Mercy Calihan Hall. C-D Division at 1 p.m., A-B at 3 p.m. Warren DeLaSalle is the defending A-B champion, and Detroit Loyola, the defending C-D champion.

The boys will begin determining who will be in the championship game with quarterfinal games on Feb. 19. The A-B Division will play at Bloomfield Hills Marian, while C-D Division games will be played at Southgate Aquinas Learning Center. Tip-ff times at both sites are 12 noon, 1:30 p.m., 3 p.m, and 4:30 p.m.

Boys basketball semi-finals at Marian will be held Feb. 22 and 23 at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. both days.

Feb. 25 – “Operation Friendship” girls basketball championship at Marian between the Catholic League and Detroit Public School League champions.

March 3 – “Operation Friendship” boys basketball championship at Detroit Cass Tech between the Catholic League and Detroit Public School League champions.

March 5 – Boys Swimming Championship at Livonia Recreation Center. The preliminaries are held a day earlier. Brother Rice has won the event for the past 18 years.
