DETROIT — A Detroit parish will host a special Mass this weekend to celebrate and honor the culture of jazz and Gospel music in the Motor City.

Fr. Theodore Parker and Fr. Tyrone Robinson will celebrate the 2 p.m. Mass on Sunday, Sept. 1, at St. Moses the Black Parish, 1125 Oakman Blvd., Detroit.

The fourth annual Mass “is an example of our Catholic faith bringing richness to all areas of our lives,” according to organizers.

Since 2021, St. Moses the Black Parish has hosted a celebration in collaboration with the Archdiocese of Detroit’s Office of Black Catholic Ministry featuring traditional jazz instrumentation in a Mass setting, complete with soulful singing, praise and prayer. The unique history of jazz and Gospel music in the city of Detroit, and its history of building up faith, has inspired generations of Catholics and Christians.

The Mass takes place during the annual Detroit Jazz Festival, which draws thousands from across the area.

In addition, SS. Peter and Paul (Jesuit) Parish in downtown Detroit will host its eighth annual Jazz Mass, also on Sept. 1. The parish’s 11 a.m. Mass will feature music by Detroit jazz musicians Cliff Monear, Jeff Pedraz and Sean Dobbins, as well as Luke Sittard and Peyton Miller, and a Mass setting by pianist and composer Deanna Witkowski.

Both Masses are open to all.
