Despite the scorching heat, Detroit faithful follow Christ down Woodward Avenue in annual Eucharistic procession on Sunday

DETROIT Detroit faithful braved the heat on Sunday, June 22, for a Corpus Christi procession down Woodward Avenue following Mass with Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

In his homily, Archbishop Weisenburger reflected on the “glory of the Eucharist” and made a special shout-out to several first communicants who attended the Mass from parishes across the Archdiocese of Detroit.

“Your joy at the reception of Christ truly present in the Eucharist renews my joy and my hope,” Archbishop Weisenburger said.

Each time the Church remembers Christ during the consecration of the Eucharist, Jesus is made present again among us, just as he was during the first Communion at the Last Supper on Passover, Archbishop Weisenburger explained.

At that Last Supper, Jesus changed the celebration of the Passover forever, the archbishop said.

“He said, ‘From now on, when you break the bread and pour out the cup and tell the story in remembrance of me, I promise I will be present to you — truly, fully present — until the end of the ages,” Archbishop Weisenburger said.

“He has given himself to us, which our nation has just celebrated for about two and half years (during the National Eucharistic Revival), that we might be reminded of what we have known from the start: when we pour out the cup, when we break the bread and when we remember him, he is truly present to us.”
