‘February Frenzy’ hits Catholic League sports

Metro area — Sports fans are well acquainted with “March Madness,” the basketball craziness that grips the country on state and national levels.

However, there’s another mania that infects the psyches of players, families and fans in southeastern Michigan, particularly, the Detroit Catholic League.

It’s “February Frenzy.” More than 1,200 student-athletes will be vying for championships in 10 sports.

The “frenzy” is so rabid that it starts a couple of days in January and ends five days into March. The only cure is to enjoy it.

Here’s the schedule for the remainder of this month and the first part of February (for times, it’s best to check the school or www.chsl.com):

• Jan. 30 – Competitive Cheer Championship at Livonia Ladywood (begins 1 p.m.) and Pom Pon and Dance Championship (begins at 10 a.m.) at Dearborn Divine Child. Divine Child is the defending champion in both competitions.

• Feb. 5 – Wrestling Championships at Detroit U-D Jesuit. Defending champion, Novi Detroit Catholic Central, has won the competition the last 16 years.

• Feb. 7 – Boys and Girls Ski Championships at Mt. Brighton. Birmingham Brother Rice is the defending boys champion, and Birmingham Marian, the girls.

• Feb. 10 – Girls basketball C-D quarterfinals held at home sites.

• Feb. 12 – Girls basketball semi-finals held at Madonna University. C-D Division games at 12 noon and 1:30 p.m.; A-B Division contests at 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.
