For the most part, familiar names dominate 2010-11 CHSL champions

Metro area -- The expected and the unexpected.

That about sums up the 2010-11 Catholic High School League champions.

It was expected that Farmington Hills Mercy would win the girls swimming title, just as it has for the past 20 years in a row and for the 42nd time in the last 43 years.

It was expected that Novi Detroit Catholic Central would capture the wrestling, cross country and track titles.

Or that Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice would again dominate the field in boys swimming (19 years in a row) and lacrosse.

Or that Ann Arbor Fr. Gabriel Richard girls track squad would win its seventh straight track title.

It was unexpected that Warren Regina would win its first girls cross country championship in 25 years. Warren DeLasalle pulled off a surprise for the A-B boys baseball crown, and Madison Heights Bishop Foley won its first-ever C-D boys basketball championship.

Fr. Gabriel Richard won seven CHSL titles, Bloomfield Hills Marian six, and Brother Rice and Catholic Central, five each.
