Fr. Edmund D. Muir ‘practiced what he preached’

MuirDetroit — Fr. Edmund Donald Muir, a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit for 65 years, passed away peacefully July 12. He was 90 years old.

Born in Detroit on Sept. 18, 1923, to Cecil and Ellen Muir, the future Fr. Muir studied for his undergraduate degree at Sacred Heart Seminary in Detroit and received his graduate degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was ordained May 21, 1949.

Fr. Muir’s assignments included associate pastor at Visitation Parish, Detroit (1949-54); Epiphany Parish, Detroit (1954-57); and Our Lady of Victory Parish, Detroit (1958). He also served as temporary administrator of Epiphany Parish (1957-58).

From 1958-63, Fr. Muir served as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force, and after his return to the States served as associate pastor at Annunciation Parish from 1963-68.

In 1968, Fr. Muir became pastor of Epiphany Parish in Detroit; a position he held until 1982. He served as pastor of St. Clement Parish in Dearborn from 1982 until he attained senior priest status on July 1, 1993.

Paul Kirkhart, a parishioner of St. Clement Parish, recalled that Fr. Muir “loved to wear sweaters.”

“One time — he didn’t know he was being watched — he encountered a needy person,” said Kirkhart. “He took the sweater off his own back and gave it to the person.”

Kirkhart added that Fr. Muir “practiced what he preached,” including financially contributing to the Church.

Another parishioner of St. Clement, Peter Solomon Jr., said he remembers Fr. Muir forming a youth and young adult group while at the parish.

“It provided social, service and sharing opportunities for those between 18 and 30,” Solomon said. “This was energizing for a parish of mostly seniors.”

Fr. Muir was predeceased by his parents, Cecil and Ellen Muir, his brother James and his sisters-in-law Shirley and Grace. He is survived by his brother Donald; sister, Betty (Kenneth) Law; several nieces and nephews, as well as other loving family members.

A funeral Mass was celebrated July 17 for Fr. Muir at St. Clement Parish in Dearborn. Interment is at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.

Condolences may be sent to Mrs. Betty Law, 3266 Interlaken St., West Bloomfield, MI, 48323. Memorial donations may be sent to the Senior Priests Pension Fund, Archdiocese of Detroit, 1234 Washington Blvd., C-4, Detroit, MI, 48226.
