Fr. Herbert Raterman, SJ

Fr. Herbert Raterman, SJ, a priest for 58 years and a Jesuit for 71 years, died Oct. 9 at the age of 89. At the time of his death, Fr. Raterman had been an active member of the Colombiere Center in Clarkston since 2005.

Herbert Raterman was born July 6, 1924, in Cincinnati and entered the Society of Jesus on Sept. 1, 1942, in Milford, Ohio. He was ordained June 15, 1955, at West Baden College in southern Indiana, and took final vows on Aug. 15, 1959. As a Jesuit, Fr. Raterman earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Loyola University in Chicago. He also took summer counseling courses at Xavier University, the University of Detroit, and Loyola University Chicago (1958-1965).

Fr. Raterman spent much of his apostolic life as a teacher, counselor, retreat and pastoral minister in Chicago and Cincinnati. He was also the moderator of the radio program “Moments of Reparation” from 1979-2005. Fr. Raterman was an active member of the Colombiere Center Jesuit Community since moving there in 2005.

“Fr. Raterman was a family friend, confidant and inspiration to us all as we grew up in the 70s,” wrote Dave Ross of Cincinnati in an online remembrance. “His guidance and personal advice will be forever in my heart.”

Fr. Raterman is survived by his siblings Richard A. and John D. Raterman, Mary Barnhorn, and is predeceased by his brothers Thomas L. and Joseph T. Raterman.

A funeral Mass for Fr. Raterman was celebrated Oct. 15 at the Colombiere Center in Clarkston. Burial is in Colombiere Center Cemetery. Memorial gifts may be made to Jesuit International Missions or the Jesuit Partnership, 2050 N. Clark Street, Chicago, IL 60614.
