Fr. Louis Grandpre, a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit, died Feb. 20 at the age of 81.
Fr. Grandpre was born March 13, 1934, in Hale, Mich., and was ordained June 3, 1961, at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit.
Fr. Grandpre’s first assignment was as associate pastor of Epiphany Parish, Detroit (1961-63). He was on the faculty of Sacred Heart Major Seminary starting in 1965, during which time he also served as a weekend assistant at St. Alphonsus Parish, Dearborn; St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish, Algonac; and St. Ives Parish, Southfield. He became pastor of St. Ives in 1974, serving there until becoming pastor of St. Paul of Tarsus Parish in 1990. He retired in 2003.
Subsequent to a 2013 determination by the Archdiocese of Detroit that an allegation of sexual misconduct with a minor dating back to the early years of his ministry was substantive, Fr. Grandpre was permanently removed from public ministry according to the norms of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.
A funeral Mass was Feb. 27 at SS. Peter and Paul Parish, Detroit.
