DETROIT — Fr. Kenneth Reinhart, OFM Cap., was known for his “passion, creativity, directness and administrative skills,” according to the Detroit-based Capuchin Province of St. Joseph.
“Despite his struggles with a number of illnesses, he was committed to his ministries and the people they served, as well as to the Capuchin fraternity,” a statement from the province said.
Fr. Reinhart, former pastor of St. Mary Magdalen Parish, Hazel Park, and director of Capuchin Retreat in Washington Township since 2007, died May 22 while in hospice care at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna, Wis. He was 70.
Born July 3, 1941, Kenneth Reinhart was invested with the Capuchin habit on Aug. 31, 1960, and made his first profession of vows Sept. 1, 1961. He made his perpetual vows Sept. 1, 1966, and was ordained a priest at the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Marathon, Wis., on Sept. 13, 1968.
In his more than 50 years as a Capuchin friar, Fr. Reinhart served in a variety of ministries. He was a formation director in Milwaukee and Detroit and served as pastor of parishes in Saginaw and Hazel Park, and as director of St. Anthony Retreat Center, Marathon, Wis., and Capuchin Retreat in Washington Township. He also served as provincial minister of the Province of St. Joseph (1987-93).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Charles Reinhart and Delores Mary (Krause) Reinhart.
He is survived by his siblings Richard (Nancy) Reinhart of Brookfield, Wis., Albert (Shelby) Reinhart of Menomonee Falls, Wis., Gary (Lois) Reinhart of Colgate, Wis., and Karen Reinhart of Milwaukee.
A funeral Mass was celebrated May 26 in the chapel of St. Lawrence seminary, Mount Calvary, Wis. Burial was in the Capuchin cemetery on the seminary grounds.
