Basilian Fr. Robert Duggan died Oct. 4 at the age of 80.
Fr. Duggan was born Feb. 2, 1935, to Raymond and Susan Duggan, the brother of Patricia (Bill), Antonnette and the late Lawrence (Marge).
Fr. Duggan made his first profession of vows with the Congregation of St. Basil on Aug. 15, 1964, and was ordained Dec. 13 the same year.
Among his many assignments, Fr. Duggan taught at Detroit Catholic Central High School (1965-74), and served as a weekend assistant at St. Blase Parish during those years. He was pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Amhersburg, Ontario (1982-89), and Ste. Anne de Detroit Parish (1989-2003). He was an avid golfer, reader and devoted Detroit Tigers fan.
Fr. Duggan sat on the board of several neighborhood associations, including the Bagley Housing Association, and was involved in GRACE (Gang Retirement and Education/ Employment) while he was at St. Anne de Detroit. Fr. Duggan was founder of the Detroit Area Film Teachers (DAFT) in 1969. During his time at St. Blase, he was coordinator of the Charismatic Prayer Groups for the Archdiocese of Detroit. He also had a weekly radio program, “Our God Reigns,” as director of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Center.
Fr. Duggan is survived by nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass was celebrated at Ste. Anne de Detroit Parish Oct. 10. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
