Fr. Robert Louis Russell, SS, Dies at 81

Father Robert Louis Russell, SS, entered eternal life on June 16, 2010, at the age of 81. He was a member of the Society of St. Sulpice.

Father Russell was ordained for the Archdiocese of Detroit on June 4, 1955, and served two years in St. Angela Parish in Roseville, Michigan.

He entered the Order of St. Sulpice in 1957. Father Russell was then assigned to serve on the faculty of St. Joseph College in Mountain View, CA, followed by St. Charles College in Catonsville, Maryland. He received his S.T.L. from the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, in 1961.

In 1961, he joined the faculty at Seminario Conciliar in Merida, Mexico. After two years on the faculty there, Father Russell served for 33 years as pastor of Holy Family Church in Merida, from 1963-1996.

In 1964, Father Russell founded the Apostolic Bible College in Merida. He also was a founder of the Community of the Mother of God (now known as Missioners of the Mother of God) in 1980.

A Christian burial was celebrated and Father Russell was buried June 17, 2010 in Panteon Jardines del Recuerdo, Merida, Mexico.
