ROYAL OAK ─ Shrine Catholic High School in Royal Oak hosted local police and fire department personnel for a distracted-driving demonstration on April 29.

A survivor of a distracted driving incident shared their story with Shrine sophomores, while police, fire, emergency response officials and an Oakland County prosecutor explained the real-world consequences of distracted driving.

Students even got a demonstration of the Jaws of Life in action to illustrate what happens after a serious crash.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 58% of teen crashes involved driver distraction. Drivers under the age of 20 have the highest rate of fatal accidents related to distraction, according to the CDC.
