STERLING HEIGHTS ─ St. Rene Goupil Parish in Sterling Heights was filled with color, music and deep devotion as the Filipino community gathered for the annual celebration of Viva Senor Santo Nino, a beloved and centuries-old expression of faith.
Nearly 1,000 people attended this joyful event, which was organized as part of the KKPM Filipino Group of Southeast Michigan, highlighting both the vibrancy of Filipino culture and its strong Catholic roots.
Devotion to Santo Nino, the Holy Child Jesus, dates back to 1521, when Spanish explorers presented the image to Queen Juana of Cebu. Over time, the Santo Nino became a powerful symbol of God’s closeness to the Filipino people ─ especially His presence among the poor, the joyful, and the resilient.
Today, celebrations such as this one continue to unite generations through prayer, dance and cultural pride.
The celebration at St. Rene began with Mass celebrated by Fr. Tim Galos, grounding the festivities in worship and thanksgiving. From the Eucharist flowed a spirit of joy that carried into the cultural program that followed.
One of the most striking features of the celebration was the traditional Filipino attire worn by the dancers. The women, portraying queens, were dressed in elegant, richly colored gowns inspired by royal and indigenous styles.
Their costumes symbolized dignity, grace and the Filipino people’s reverence for the Santo Nino as King. Each queen depicted devotion, beauty and faith offered in humility to the Christ Child.
The male dancers, dressed as warriors, represented strength, courage and protection. Their movements reflected the readiness of the Filipino people to defend both faith and family, honoring their ancestors while offering their strength to God. Together, the dancers told a story of a people whose faith has endured through centuries of challenge and triumph.
This annual celebration was more than a cultural event – it was a living testimony to faith, community and heritage. Through music, dance, prayer and fellowship, the Filipino community shared a powerful witness of joy in Christ with the wider parish family of St. Rene.
As voices rang out with the joyful cry, “Viva Senor Santo Nino,” hearts were lifted in gratitude – for faith passed down through generations, for a welcoming parish community, and for the enduring presence of the Holy Child Jesus among His people.
