Detroit -- Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes girls’ basketball team just keeps racking up the wins. In addition to being two-time Catholic League champs, they’re now also two-time state champs following a 53-35 drubbing of Bark River-Harris in the championship game last Saturday.
After opening their state tournament with a narrow 43-41 victory over fellow Catholic Leaguers Marine City Cardinal Mooney, the Lakers seemed to find an easier go the rest of the way. They topped Southfield Christian by 8, Bay City All Saints by 25, Central Lake by 11 and Bark River-Harris by 18.
“All-in-all, I couldn’t be more proud of this group today,” said coach Steve Robak at a press conference following the championship game.
While Lauren Robak, often the team’s sharpest shooter, had trouble draining baskets, junior Carlee Cottrell stepped up to lead the scoring with 16 points against Bark River-Harris. Ava Doetsch put in 13, Lexie Robak 11, and Lauren Robak 9.
But the whole team came into play in executing a press that gave Bark River-Harris fits throughout the game.
Five members of the Lakers team are expected to be back next year, with the other eight set to graduate this spring.
