Local Year of Faith pilgrimages to highlight Jesus’ teachings, holy sites

Detroit — A pair of local pilgrimages celebrating the Year of Faith will visit churches and holy sites throughout Metro Detroit in the coming months.

The first, on Aug. 10, will be led by Auxiliary Bishop Francis Reiss and Fr. Alex Kratz, OFM, and will visit Orchard Lake St. Mary, the Felician Motherhouse in Livonia, Ste. Anne de Detroit Church and Holy Cross (Hungarian) Church in Detroit before returning to Orchard Lake.

The pilgrimage, “Walking on Holy Ground,” will emphasize the roots of the Catholic faith by encountering four distinct biblical locations and teachings, from “In the Beginning…” in Nazareth to Jesus’ call to discipleship and promise to make “Fishers of Men” in Galilee.

The pilgrimage is sponsored by Terra Sancta Pilgrimages, the Knights of Columbus and Orchard Lake Schools. To register or for more information, call (248) 320-0107 or click the link on the homepage at www.aod.org. Cost is $75 per person and includes meals.

A second Year of Faith pilgrimage will be Sept. 7 and will include a tour of the grounds of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Plymouth and a blessing by Fr. John Riccardo with the relics of St. Anne. The pilgrimage also will visit the Shrine Chapel of Our Lady of Orchard Lake to venerate a relic of soon-to-be St. John Paul II — a piece of blood-stained clothing the late pontiff wore during a 1981 assassination attempt. After a visit to St. Florian Church in Hamtramck, where Cardinal Karol Wojtyla celebrated Mass during a visit in 1969, the pilgrimage will conclude with a tour of historic St. Joseph Church in Detroit, where Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron will celebrate a vigil Mass.

The September pilgrimage is sponsored by the Changing Lives Together stewardship capital campaign. For more information or to register, call (313) 565-8888 ext. 179. Cost is $75 per person and includes meals.
