GARDEN CITY — Four Catholic schools in Wayne County merging into a new, regional school starting in 2016-17 have announced the name and site of the new venture.
Divine Mercy Roman Catholic Regional School, which will collectively be supported by the merging schools of St. Robert Bellarmine in Redford, St. Genevieve in Livonia, St. Damian in Westland and St. Raphael in Garden City, was announced to parents and parishioners as the name of the new school by a committee of parish and school representatives in late December.
Officials from the four parishes, all of which formerly operated independent grade schools, also told parents and parishioners the new school would be located at the former St. Raphael School site at 31500 Beechwood in Garden City.
The new school was announced in May 2015 after a “thorough review” of the four schools’ finances and enrollment figures revealed a need for collaboration, according to a statement then from the pastors of each of the parishes. Three of the schools are continuing to operate as the new regional school is being developed, while St. Robert Bellarmine School has suspended operations for 2015-16 because of low enrollment.
According to the pastors, the goal of Divine Mercy Roman Catholic Regional School will be “to create a school with a strong Catholic identity, strong academics, affordable tuition and sustainable long-term funding” as well as to maintain the presence of a Catholic primary education in the area.
With approval from Archbishop Allen H. Vigneron, a committee of school and parish volunteers has been meeting since June 2015 to develop plans and a strategic vision for the new school.
In addition to the name and location, representatives also announced Ann Tonissen, currently principal of St. Genevieve School, would be principal of the new school. The school’s first open house will take place from noon-2 p.m. Jan. 31 at the newly announced location.
