Night Fever’ to invite people inside

Detroit — A candle, an invitation and the Blessed Sacrament are the primary ingredients for a planned March 14 event aimed at bringing people in off the street — literally — and into a Catholic church.

Local young adult leaders will sponsor the Detroit version of “Night Fever,” a concept that began in Germany after World Youth Day in 2005 and has spread to U.S. cities such as Chicago, Sacramento and New York.

During the evangelization-themed event at Old St. Mary’s Church in Detroit’s popular Greektown district, volunteers will move around the streets outside the church inviting people to come in, light a candle and pray. Those inside the church welcome and lead people inside, where they are invited to place their lit candle before the Blessed Sacrament.

Volunteers are welcome for the event, which will be from 7:30-10 p.m. Mass, dinner and training for volunteers will be provided beforehand. For more information, visit nightfeverdetroit.eventbrite.com.

Old St. Mary’s Church is at 646 Monroe Ave., Detroit.
