Matt DeBlouw has opted to take advantage of a scholarship to Michigan State University after spending the last two years with the Muskegon Lumberjacks of the United States Hockey League (USHL). He was drafted two years ago by Muskegon as a 16-year-old sophomore out of Marine City Cardinal Mooney, scoring 16 goals and 32 assists. He was selected in the seventh round (186th overall) by the Calgary Flames last month in the NHL Draft.
“My family and I talked about it (NHL draft) a million times: no matter what, I’m going to MSU. I need the education,” said DeBlouw, who graduated from Cardinal Mooney this spring after completing his high school course work by tutor and online.
It appears that Brother Rice’s Mackenzie Maceachern, Michigan’s 2012 Mr. Hockey, will defer his verbal commitment to Michigan State for a year to play with the Chicago Steel of the USHL, who drafted him in May. Maceachern was picked a month later by the NHL’s St. Louis Blues in the third round, 67th overall.
