Priest gets jail, restitution in Angel Fund theft

Detroit — Fr. Timothy Kane, the former associate pastor of St. Moses the Black Parish in Detroit who was found guilty of stealing from a charity fund set up to aid Detroit’s poor, was sentenced Dec. 15 to serve 12 months in jail and pay $131,400 in restitution.

Fr. Kane, 58, will serve the jail time in increments in Decembers and Junes, as well as some weekends, according to the unusual sentence handed down by Wayne County Circuit Judge Bruce Morrow. Prosecutors had sought at least a three- to five-year sentence.

Fr. Kane was convicted Oct. 7 of embezzling between $1,000 and $20,000 from the now-ended Angel Fund, which was set up by an anonymous donor.

Fr. Kane apologized to family, friends and the public during his sentencing and said he was “embarrassed” over the situation and felt “sadness” over the confidence they had lost in him as a result. The priest, however, has continued to maintain his innocence, declining a plea deal and claiming he mistakenly signed a confession statement to police during a diabetic episode.

Since his arrest, Fr. Kane has been prohibited by the Archdiocese of Detroit from presenting himself publicly as a priest.
