Retired priest restricted from ministry after abuse allegations

Detroit — A senior priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit has been restricted from all public ministry as a result of an allegation of sexual misconduct with a minor dating back to the early years of his service in the archdiocese.

Fr. Louis Grandpre, 79, who retired in 2003 after serving as pastor of St. Paul of Tarsus Parish, Clinton Township, is the priest in question.

A news release from the Archdiocese of Detroit stated that civil authorities had been notified of the allegations against Fr. Grandpre, and that the Archdiocesan Review Board, the consultative body that advises the archbishop on matters pertaining to abuse, has deemed the allegations are substantive.

Fr. Grandpre was ordained in 1961 and served as associate pastor of Epiphany Parish, Detroit. He was on the faculty of Sacred Heart Major Seminary starting in 1965, during which time he also served as a weekend assistant at St. Alphonsus Parish, Dearborn; St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish, Algonac; and St. Ives Parish, Southfield. He became pastor of St. Ives in 1974, serving there until becoming pastor of St. Paul of Tarsus Parish in 1990.
