Three of the seven winners, among 7,600 nationwide, are from Detroit Catholic Central High School in Novi, while other winners represent Marian High School in Bloomfield Hills, Notre Dame Preparatory High School in Pontiac, Shrine Catholic High School in Royal Oak, and St. Catherine of Siena Academy in Wixom.
Three of the students — Grace M. Milton (Marian), Michael J. Soisson (Notre Dame Prep) and Andrew R. Gobis (Detroit Catholic Central) — were selected to win $2,500 scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and chosen by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors based on their academic records, standardized test scores, essays, letters of recommendation and leadership contributions. Milton plans to study chemical engineering; Soissson plans to study mechanical engineering; and Gobis plans to study biomedical engineering.
Two students — Luke M. Fox (Detroit Catholic Central) and Leya T. Maliekal (St. Catherine of Siena) — were among 4,100 winners of college-sponsored scholarships worth between $500 and $2,500 annually. Fox, whose major is undecided, was awarded a scholarship from Kalamazoo College, while Maliekal, who plans to study medicine, was awarded a scholarship from Wayne State University.
Two other students — Robert Newman Brewer (Detroit Catholic Central) and Ketura L. Webb (Shrine) — were among 800 high school seniors nationwide awarded National Achievement Scholarships worth $2,500. The National Achievement Scholarship Program, founded in 1964, honors academically outstanding black students and is financed by grants from approximately 30 corporations and professional associations. Webb plans to study medicine, while Brewer is undecided.
The seven local winners were among 18 finalists from local Catholic schools, 10 of whom were from Novi Detroit Catholic Central High School alone. The finalists were:
