Sr. Anne Bohner, CSJ

Sr. Anne Bohner, CSJ, died Dec. 24 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She was 92 and had been in religious life for 76 years.

She was born Anne Bohner in Vaskut, Hungary on July 10, 1918, the daughter of Jacob and Magdalena (Lackner) Bohner. She was a member of St. Bernard Parish in Detroit at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on June 30, 1934. She received the name Sr. Magdala at her reception on January 7, 1935, but later returned to the use of her baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on January 8, 1937, and final vows on January 8, 1940.

Sr. Bohner earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in German from Nazareth College and a Master of Arts degree in German from Marquette University. She taught in several schools including St. Francis Xavier in Ecorse, St. James in Ferndale, Muskegon Catholic Central High School in Muskegon, Bishop Borgess High School in Redford Township and St. Veronica in Eastpointe. For almost 25 years Sr. Bohner taught religious education classes, and she also spent several summers teaching in the Reading Center at Nazareth College.

In 1992 Sr. Bohner retired to Nazareth Center and assisted in the SSJ History Room.

Her funeral Mass was on Dec. 28 in the Holy Family Chapel. Interment was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery at Nazareth.
