Sr. Connie Hoffman, IHM

Sr. Connie Hoffman, IHM, 89, died June 27 at her home, the IHM Motherhouse in Monroe.

Sr. Hoffman was one of two girls of Urban and Cecilia (Miller) Hoffman. She was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Monroe and given the name Constance. Sr. Hoffman attended Maybee and St. Mary Academy elementary schools and graduated from St. Mary Academy in Monroe. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Monroe in 1940, taking the religious name of Olivia.

Sr. Hoffman earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College and a master’s degree from the University of Detroit. She taught in formal education for 36 years at Our Lady of Lourdes, River Rouge; St. Louis, Mt. Clemens; St. Felicitas, Chicago; Epiphany, St. Vincent and Gesu, Detroit; Hall of the Divine Child, St. Mary Academy and St. Mary Catholic Central, Monroe; St. Vincent, Pontiac; SS. Peter and Paul, Ionia; Holy Name, Birmingham; and St. Mary, Lorain, Ohio. These years of teaching were interrupted for 10 years in 1972-1982, when Sr. Hoffman ministered as religious education coordinator at St. Kieran in Utica and St. Cyril of Jerusalem in Taylor.

In 1988, Sr. Hoffman returned to Monroe and worked for 12 years in St. Mary Health Care Center. She retired in 2000 and moved to the Motherhouse in 2003.

She entered the Health Care Center in 2008, where she resided until her death. She is survived by her sister, Ruth Marie Burt, and nieces and nephews.

Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated July 3. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse campus. Memorials may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI 48162-7909.
