Sr. DavisSr. Evangeline Davis, formerly Sr. Mary Samuel Davis, died Dec. 4 at the Dominican Life Center. She was 98 and in her 77th year in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.
Sr. Davis was born in Detroit to Samuel and Edna (Mills) Davis. She graduated from Central High School in Detroit and received degrees from St. Joseph College (Siena Heights College) and Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian; The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.
Sr. Davis spent nearly 59 years ministering in education in Michigan, Florida, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Hungary. In Michigan, she taught at Dominican High School, Detroit (1940-43); St. Joseph, St. Joseph (1943-44); Port Huron Catholic, Port Huron (1965-69); Bishop Gallagher, Harper Woods (1969-70); and for 23 years as professor and chair of the Language Department at Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian (1948-52, 1970-89).
Sr. Davis has no living relatives. Mass of Christian Burial was offered in St. Catherine Chapel of the Dominican Life Center on Dec. 9, followed by burial in the Congregation cemetery.
