Sr. Flora Brennan, IHM, 94, died Jan. 19 in the IHM Health Care Center in Monroe.

Sr. Flora was one of nine children; three boys, three girls, and two children who died at birth, Andrew and Clara (Hartley) Brennan. She was born Sept. 12, 1918, and given the name Mary Elizabeth. Sr. Flora attended Lake Township and St. Thomas Aquinas elementary schools and several high schools in Toledo, Ohio, graduating from St. Mary Academy in Monroe. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Monroe, in 1935, taking the religious name of Sr. Flora.

She earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College, a master’s degree in education from Wayne State University and a master’s in fine arts from the University of Notre Dame (Indiana). She taught in formal education for 45 years at St. Patrick, Carleton; St. Philip, Battle Creek; St. John, Jackson; Sacred Heart, Dearborn; All Saints, St. Gregory, St. Mary of Redford, Detroit; and at St. Mary Academy, Monroe; St. Mary, Akron, Ohio; Luke Powers, Flint; and Trinidad Catholic High School, Trinidad, Colo.

The next 19 years, Sr. Flora taught in Puerto Rico. She ministered at the Catholic University of Puerto Rico in Ponce for 17 of those years as teacher, chairwoman, and associate professor in fine arts. She spent two years at the Charismatic Communication Center in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico, as art editor of Alabare Magazine and art director of the Charismatic Renewal Services, Inc. She retired to the Motherhouse in Monroe in 1983 and participated in tutoring and other services at the Motherhouse. Sr. Flora was admitted to the Health Care Center in 2001, where she resided until her death.

Sr. Flora is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert, Randolph, Arley; and her sisters, Nellie, Wanda and Faye.

Mass of Resurrection was Jan. 23, with Fr. Marc Gawronski presiding. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus. Memorials may be made to the IHM Retirement Fund, 610 W. Elm Ave., Monroe, MI 48162-7909.
